knowledge reflections blog

Knowledge Reflections (Blog)

Recently revitalized, this blog is a series of occasional musings by David Skyrme on aspects of knowledge management he comes across in everyday life. Whether it's a comment on a well established technique, such as sharing best practice, or some thoughts on how we use or misuse knowledge, there is always some insights to get you reflecting on your approaches to KM.

knowledge briefings

Knowledge Briefings

Originally published as a series of Insights each briefing gives a management overview of a development in the networked knowledge economy. Dating back to 1995 the older briefings are gradually being updated. As well as knowledge management, topics include virtual working, the internet, hybrid managers and the learning organization.

articles

Articles

Articles and conference papers written by David Skyrme which cover the field of knowledge management as it evolved from the mid-1990s. There are also articles on teleworking and other management topics, in particular the linkage between information systems / IT and business. New - the full text for several articles is available for the first time.

presentations

Presentations

Over his career David Skyrme has presented to a wide range of audiences across the world. This section gives a selection of presentations, particularly the first ones on a given topic. As with the articles, several are made publicly available for the first time.

case studies

Case Studies

There are now many hundreds of examples of both successful and unsuccessful KM initiatives. Our early reports on KM included more than 30 in-depth case studies of 5 pages or more. This section will include summaries of cases that illustrate particular approaches or techniques. Currently under development it includes examples from Texas Instruments, UK Department of Health and the British Council as a flavour of what is to follow.

books

Books

From just a few books available in 1995 - some of them still remain as 'classics' which are highly relevant and readable today - hundreds of books have been written on the subject of knowledge management. We give our selection with mini-reviews.

reports

Reports

David Skyrme and his associates have written several reports on knowledge management. Most are now out-of-print, so we are looking at ways of making these older reports available. However, Public Sector - Public Knowledge is still available with a 2008 update, and a new report Knowledge Management: 10 Topical Themes is under development. This section also highlights some free external reports that we have found useful.

periodicals

Periodicals

Alas, the number of KM magazines aimed at practitioners has declined markedly over the last decade. Taking their place are a growing number of academic journals. While this provides a growing body of peer-reviewed material including surveys and case studies, their audience - unlike ours - is not the KM practitioner at the sharp end of business. We review what is available in both genres - management/practitioner and academic.

km links

Websites

This section provides links into some of the most useful websites on KM that are not covered in other resource sections. Several of our top websites of the past are now omitted as they have not been kept updated (quite a few were specific projects that developed km portals that have ended). Many of those we recommend are from long-term acknowledged KM pioneers and experts.

organizations

Organizations

This section provides links into some of the most useful websites on KM that are not covered in other resource sections. Several of our top websites of the past are now omitted as they have not been kept updated (quite a few were specific projects that developed km portals that have ended). Many of those we recommend are from long-term acknowledged KM pioneers and experts.

courses

Courses

Many training and conference organizations run short courses on knowledge management, too numerous to cover here. This section looks at some of the more substantive university level courses, such as Masters in Knowledge Management, and KM as part of an MBA. Some consideration is also given to courses that are 'accredited' by various organizations, some more credible than others.
