COURSE REPORT

Banff: Training Knowledge Leadership

Yvonne Buma

As part of the Governance and Executive Leadership Programs, the Banff Center for Management (Banff, Canada) held its residential course 'Creating Value from Knowledge and Membership' in November, 2000. The program is designed to help organizations become better creators of value from the experience, knowledge and learning that occurs within the organization. Unique in this program is the way in which cognitive and other learning tools are used and the integration of arts and aboriginal experience in the learning of the participants.

During four days executives from all over Canada were introduced to different aspects of knowledge strategy by among others ENTOVATION members Debra M. Amidon and Hubert St. Onge (Clarica) and by Mary Baetz (Western Management Consulting). Also, storytelling was introduced as a mechanism for collaboration and knowledge sharing was illustrated by the concepts of Stephen Denning's new book Springboard as well as descriptions from a Canadian elder. There are prospects underway for the Intellectual Capital reporting for First Nations - the traditional cultural heritage from 600 tribes. The Banff Centre is known internationally as a Centre for the Cultural and Performing Arts; and theatre production was examined as an illustration of the innovation process.

Three life cases were studied - a start-up, a network non-profit organization and a highly successful medical organization. All of them used the ENTOVATION Knowledge Innovation® assessment method to analyze their situation and were able to create new insights and proposals for furthering the development of the organizational knowledge strategy. The course also examined the 7C's of Knowledge Leadership - see summary at http://www.entovation.com/whatsnew/leadership-7cs.htm - an article that appeared in the recent 200 Handbook for Business strategy.
